English Language Arts

For English classes, teachers have enjoyed using Flint’s essay tutors. The AI acts as a writing coach and gives personalized feedback to each student. The writing level, essay objectives, tone, and style can all be specified by the teacher to the AI, which can then guide the student gently without overtaking their voice or writing the assignment for them.

Teachers from 3rd grade all the way up to high school have expressed how Flint enables them to diversify their teaching. The AI can provide alternative opinions to the teacher’s, teaching students to collaborate, ask well-structured questions, and apply feedback to their ideas.

Using Flint to give AI structure and supplement not supplant students' writing.

"Flint has given my students a conversation partner with whom they can discuss ideas, receive feedback, and refine their thinking. After working on a recent essay assignment, one of my students said that the essay drafting tool in Flint was like having me there throughout the writing process. Flint is providing a framework where AI functions as an assistant for, rather than a replacement of, students' writing.

Furthermore, Flint provides a structure for more creative AI assignments. My AP English Literature students were able to have conversations with characters from the books they were reading. First, with Briony Tallis from Atonement, where students debated whether Briony was trustworthy or not. Then, several weeks later, students took on the role of Frankenstein's Creature and had a conversation with Victor Frankenstein. In both cases, the conversation encouraged the students' creative thinking as they reflected on the literature. All of these aspects of the platform help frame AI usage appropriately for students to understand and utilize AI while also honing their communication skills."

Leveraging Flint's roleplay and editing abilities for her English students' reading and writing assignments.

"Flint has been both an educational and engaging tool to incorporate into my class. Before we read James and the Giant Peach, my students had the opportunity to interview Roald Dahl. They enjoyed the AI persona’s humorous and witty comments that helped them learn about Roald Dahl’s life as a person and author.

After finishing our narrative writing unit, I uploaded my editing checklist into Flint. The students loved showing the AI their piece, and talking with it about the strengths and areas of growth in their writing. I have never seen my students so engaged in editing. I had initially put a 30 minute time-limit on the assignment, but my students begged me to extend it. Wow!

I have loved exploring the possibilities that Flint offers both teachers and students. I have loved turning to the AI chat to discover and talk through new project ideas for my classes. Flint has also been a huge timesaver in more mundane tasks like making worksheets or re-making old quizzes."

Social Studies

In history, government, economics, sociology, etc., teachers have used chat tutors in which Flint’s AI and the student role-play conversations with historical figures, debate famous controversies, and conduct case studies analyzing real-life scenarios.

To ensure that the AI helps students specifically review topics taught in class, teachers can upload files and websites as references for the AI. In this way, Flint’s assignments are personalized for each teacher’s specific syllabus and for each student’s knowledge level.

Employing Flint as a personalized, 24/7 tutor for each student in his history classes.

“Flint has really made my job a lot more fun. The kids love Flint, and are asking me to use it more! For students that struggled, Flint gently put them back on track. I could do that myself, but not at 9pm at night when students are reviewing for a quiz. Flint’s AI runs personalized review sessions for me, and I can follow up with a kid if they’re stuck. I had a student bring Flint into extra help, and we went over the AI chat to see where they got stuck and worked through it together. Flint is better than Kahoot because it’s not just for the smartest and fastest kids in class. Instead, it’s personalized for students so it can give them extra help if they get stuck.”

Computer Science

Computer science teachers have been leveraging the code editor in Flint’s chat assignments to help students learn new concepts and definitions, derive algorithms, and practice debugging. Assignments can vary in content—from ones that closely follow the AP CS curriculum to personalized projects that pique the interest of each budding computing expert.

Flint’s AI can generate code snippets in 50+ programming languages, including Java, Python, and C++. It can also adjust question difficulty to student’s demonstrated understanding and give hints without giving away the answer, allowing students to truly learn and practice problem solving.

Harnessing Flint's adaptability to allow his computer science students to learn at their own pace.

"We have typically done Flint assignments early in units where students first practice the skills. With this, students have done a mixture of generating code snippets and debugging. Even as the initial novelty of Flint wore off, engagement has stayed exceptionally high. This is in large part due to the pacing. With any other activity we do, there are top students who want to rapidly move to more complex material and students struggling who need more time on the basics. As a teacher you are stuck trying to find a middle ground that will ultimately leave both sides underserved. However, in these activities I can rotate as a facilitator and Flint automatically scales the assignments to each student's skill level.

The Flint interface extends beyond just an LLM and was clearly designed for education. The ease of creating and tweaking these assignments cannot be overstated. Even when there were issues, the true benefit I have seen for Flint is the customer service. When I first used it for multi-line coding assignments, students naturally hit enter for a new line and the chat would respond to and mark their incomplete answer as incorrect. I mentioned this issue as feedback on the site and immediately received a reply. In less than 48 hours, Flint had a coding feature where it would behave more like an IDE. The next week, the team followed up to see if this feature fixed our issue. It is rare to find any company with that level of care."

Using Flint to give every student a 1:1 tutor and debugging assistant in his AP Computer Science and Cybersecurity classes.

"I can't emphasize enough how Flint has revolutionized my teaching approach. In my AP Computer Science and Cybersecurity classes, Flint has been an invaluable tool for introducing new concepts and assessing student understanding. My students have embraced Flint wholeheartedly. My high flyers love how they can take a deep dive into course content with an AI expert. While on the other hand students who need more attention can get a one on one tutor to help them with their specific needs. It caters to each students’ needs.

But Flint's impact doesn't stop at teaching. It has become an indispensable part of my daily routine, optimizing my workflow and acting as a personal assistant. Whether it's brainstorming ideas, assisting with tasks, or debugging tech issues, Flint is there to help. I honestly can't imagine how I managed my work before Flint. It's not just a tool, it's a game changer."

Science

Teachers can design Flint’s AI to help students recall and understand various scientific topics. When creating chat assignments, teachers can upload course material and help students review the exact concepts, vocabulary, and processes the teacher wants them to. Beyond specific curriculums, teachers can even upload lab data from class and have the student and AI work together to analyze the findings.

AI-powered assignments are designed to help students learn rather than just memorize. The AI can give hints when students get stuck and ask them to explain their reasoning once they’re getting the hang of the concept. The AI’s goal is to provide established scientific knowledge. This means, when presented with conspiracies, Flint will cite established science, address the conspiracy, and promote critical thinking, all through respectful dialogue.

Expanding students' understanding of complex biochemical processes with Flint.

"I have used Flint to guide students through biochemical information beyond what they have studied in the past. Flint allowed them to ask questions about molecules they did not understand or pathways that were unfamiliar. Students were engaged as they had a personal tutor that would guide them through complex material at their pace and level of understanding. Flint has made this assignment easier both for my students and for me as students are spending less time searching the Internet for content that is still confusing to them, and I can focus on ensuring they will reach the level of understanding required. What had once been a frustrating experience became student-driven content formation."

World Languages

Flint has multi-language support that teachers have enjoyed using to help student learn and practice foreign languages. With text-to-speech and speech-to-text for 50+ languages including French, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, and Latin, Flint supports seamless conversation practice for any topic teachers choose.

To better guide the conversational AI, teachers can specify the ACTFL proficiency level the AI should respond in and expect from the student. To better guide the content of conversations, teachers can upload teaching material from PowerPoints, Quizlets, textbooks, etc.

Having students practice their French in verbal conversations with the AI.

“AI is here to stay. Students might as well learn to use it, and it is our role as educators to prepare them for the future, where AI literacy will certainly be key! Flint has become my new favorite tool both in and out of the classroom. With the assignments feature, I can have students engage in written or spoken conversations in French about the material we study in class.

Flint supports me in implementing differentiated instruction because I can have students working on an assignment and getting feedback on it while the rest of the class is practicing their conversational skills. It’s like having a friendly TA! In the settings, I can specify my learning objectives for the task, refer to an ACTFL proficiency level, and tailor the task by uploading transcripts of short movies, links to articles, or vocabulary sets, for instance. Then, Flint will provide specific feedback to students on what they did well and what they should work on.

I also love how responsive Sohan and his team have been because they prioritize educators’ input, continually refining Flint to enrich our teaching and the student's learning experiences.”

Creating spoken, immersive role-play chats with Flint.

"I have been creating roleplay bots on Flint. I tried this in ChatGPT-4 but it was hard for the bot to stay in-role for more than 4-5 verbal exchanges. I really like that Flint is giving feedback and lets you re-do your responses, incorporating the suggestions.

I also tried the chat functionality in spoken Spanish, and the bot was able to roleplay and understand everything. It’s amazing how well it can keep asking deeper and deeper questions based on the initial prompt. I will continue to try other languages with my collegues. We have tried Spanish, French, and Chinese so far. This is such a revolutionary tool for language learning!"

Mathematics

AI technology is great at explaining step-by-step reasoning. Flint's built-in equation editor and calculator enable accurate math tutoring that AI models lack on their own. This combination of detailed reasoning and calculation accuracy enables students to get more practice and learn how to apply math to solve real-world problems.

Using Flint, teachers can set up a chat tutor to help students practice based on their knowledge and learning speed. For example, an AI times table quiz can adapt to students’ performance—as they get more questions right, the newly generated questions get more challenging, and vice versa. For applied math, Flint can walk students through word problems, monitoring their understanding and gently putting them back on track when they get confused.

Ethics

By leveraging the ability to upload resources for Flint’s AI to reference, teachers can have students chat and write with AI about both historical and current events in ethics, politics, theology, philosophy, and more. Assignments often involve interviews where the AI plays the role of a famous philosopher and debates where students craft well-structured arguments for one side of a controversial issue while the AI argues for the opposite view.

For essay tutors in these subjects, teachers can give each student a personalized writing coach that will challenge them to push their writing further and give them constructive feedback, without writing the students’ essays for them. Students can ask for advice on their essays as a whole or on a particular paragraph or sentence, and the AI will give tips based on the essay prompt and rubric outlined by the teacher.

Generating enriching exit tickets using Flint for his Ethics class.

“My Flint assignment went really well and the kids thoroughly enjoyed it. We had back-to-school night last week, and I had several parents mention to me that their kids went home and talked about the ‘cool assignment’. It's not often kids openly share with their parents about their classroom experiences, so that was pretty great to hear.

I had this idea to use AI as an exit ticket in which students would chat with the AI about Aristotle's virtue theory. First, I showed the kids a crash course video on the theory. I then set up the AI to engage the kids in a dialogue, and I could even attach the link to the video, which seemed to guide the AI to stay within the boundaries the content it covers. I tried it on my own beforehand, without pasting the link, and the AI went well beyond the video content. I thought it was really cool that just by pasting the link, the AI kept the content completely connected to what was just discussed in class. After the activity, I could see who scored well and who didn't. I could also see, via the chat history, where they may have gone wrong. When I have used other methods for exit tickets, I may have just seen an incorrect multiple-choice answer. With the AI chat history, I can actually see what the kids are thinking through their writing. It was really a useful activity.”
